Watch the video

Build background knowledge about helping out by watching “You Can Be Responsible.” When you’re done watching, ask the following question: What is one way to help out at school?

Set a purpose for reading

  • Have students do a picture walk through the issue. Then read and discuss the cover.
  • Then, before turning to page 2, say, “As we read the article, think about ways you can help out in the classroom .”
  • As you read, help kids make text-toself connections. After reading each box, ask, “Can your helping hands do that?” If the answer is yes, have them raise a helping hand!
  • When you’re done reading, do the Dance Break!

Play the online game:

Kindness Find It (skill: critical thinking)

Complete a hands-on activity: Reverse Classroom Scavenger Hunt
