Hands-on Activity: Design Your Own Medal

Skill: writing and drawing

Materials: My Medal skill sheet, scissors, crayons or markers, hole punch, yarn

  • Veterans can get medals for doing a job well, being brave, or serving others. Invite kids to give themselves medals for any of these reasons!
  • Pass out the skill sheet and let kids cut out the medal. Then help them think of things they could get a medal for, such as cleaning up the classroom, being brave on the monkey bars, or comforting a friend.
  • Have kids write their name on the top line and then complete the sentence by writing or dictating what they did.
  • Kids can draw a picture of themselves doing the medal-worthy act in the circle and color in the stars and stripes using their favorite colors.
  • Finally, punch a hole in the top and string with yarn so kids can wear their medals around their necks!
