Paired Text: Say Hello! by Rachel Isadora

  • Carmelita and her mama are on their way to visit Abuela Rosa. As they walk through the neighborhood, they say hello to many people—in many languages!

Language: How Do People Say Hello?

  • All over the world, people say hello in different ways. Try using a “greeting of the week” to greet each other with each morning!
  • Greetings to teach include hola, bonjour, ciao, jambo, konichiwa, ni hao, shalom, aloha, and namaste.

Scavenger Hunt: h

  • H is for hello! Together, find and circle every uppercase and lowercase h in the mini book.

Hands-on Activity: Hello Bulletin Board

Skill: writing and drawing

Materials: construction paper, crayons

  • Create an adorable “hello” bulletin board display. Help each child trace one hand and forearm up to the elbow.
  • Cut out the tracings and let children decorate their hands and arms with crayons and any other art materials you like. Encourage them to use their favorite colors and designs, and write their name on the arm.
  • Create a banner that says, “Say Hello to Kindergarten!” and attach children’s waving hands all around it. The different colors and patterns are a great way to point out diversity (and community) in the classroom.
