  • Before watching our video Our Flag, ask kids what they know about the American flag.
  • After watching, ask, “Why do you think there are rules for taking care of our flag?”
  • Read the magazine together. After you read, have kids retell the rules for taking care of the American flag.
  • Then check comprehension skills with the Show What You Know skill sheet.

Materials: My Flag skill sheet, crayons, pencils

  • After learning about the American flag and how it represents our country, children can make their own flag to represent themselves!
  • Hand out copies of the skill sheet and explain that they will each make a flag that tells about them. Ask them to use their favorite colors and draw a picture of something they love.
  • When kids are finished with their flags, they can fill in the sentences at the bottom. You can display kids’ flags and discuss how they represent the flag makers!
