Set a purpose for reading
Set a purpose for reading
- Have students do a picture walk through the issue. Then read and discuss the cover. Ask children if they have ever seen a military air show.
- Then, before turning to page 2, say, "Mientras leemos el artículo, piensen lo que hacen los Ángeles Azules en el espectáculo aéreo.”
- Read the issue once through. Then read it again, this time asking, “¿Qué pasa después?” after each box. Let children use the photos to describe what will happen in the next step.
- When you get to the sidebar, have children give a salute to thank veterans for their service.
- Complete the page 4 activity as a group or individually.
- When you’re done reading, do the ¡BAILA BAILA!
- Demuestra lo que sabes (skill: comprehension)
- Sopa de letras de los veteranos (skill: spelling)
Deepen students’ learning with any of these supplemental activities:
Play the online game: Construye una carta de agradecimiento
(skill: letter writing)
Complete a hands-on activity: Minilibro de los veteranos
Children will cut, color, and put together their own Veterans Day mini book. (skill: reading, writing, number order)
Read a paired text:
Veterans Day books for kindergartners can be hard to find! Hero Mom and Hero Dad by Melinda Hardin are ageappropriate books in English that celebrate military parents by comparing them to superheroes.
