Watch the video

Build background knowledge about helping out by watching “Puedes ser responsable.” When you’re done watching, ask the following question: ¿Cómo puedes echar una mano en la escuela?

Set a purpose for reading

  • Have students do a picture walk through the issue. Then read and discuss the cover.
  • Then, before turning to page 2, say, “Mientras leemos el artículo, piensen cómo podemos ayudar en la clase.”
  • As you read, help kids make text-toself connections. After reading each box, ask, ¿Puedes echar una mano con eso?" If the answer is yes, have them raise a helping hand!
  • When you’re done reading, do the ¡BAILA BAILA!

Play the online game:

Encuentra la bondad (skill: critical thinking)

Complete a hands-on activity: La búsqueda del tesoro al revés

Kids choose an item from a collection and return it to its proper place. It’s a great way for them to get to know the classroom. (skill: critical thinking, following directions)

Read a paired text

With the delightful rhyming book Nuestra clase es una familia by Shannon Olsen, you can build classroom community and remind students that they are safe and welcome in your classroom.
