A guide for using our resources

Children will understand school rules.

Vocabulary: concentrate, please, quietly

SEL Focus: self-management

Simple, spectacular ideas to boost your lessons.

Paired Text: No interrumpas by David Ezra Stein

  • In this hilarious book, Pollo interrupts every story his papa tries to read at bedtime.
  • Will Pollo learn to listen?

Vocabulary: concentrar

  • Kids learned the word concentrar in the issue. To make the word stick, sprinkle it into conversations throughout the day. For instance: “¡Estás muy concentrado en ese dibujo!” or “Me gusta cómo te concentras cuando escribes.”
  • With multiple everyday exposures, you will soon hear children using the word themselves!

Class Brainstorm: Crea tu propio tablón de reglas

  • Start by writing some school rules from the issue, such as ponte en fila en silencio and ayuda a limpiar.
  • Then add more rules, inviting children to help brainstorm. Examples might include comparte, sé amable, and no uses los puños.

Hands-on Activity: ¿Qué falta?

Skill: memory

Materials: various classroom items

  • Play a game in which children have to concentrate! Seat children in a circle. Select several classroom items, such as a paintbrush, a crayon, a block, a counting bear, and a puzzle piece. Place them on a tray in the middle of the circle.
  • Tell children to look at the tray and try to memorize what’s on it. Then have kids close their eyes as you remove one item. When kids open up, can they tell what’s missing?
  • Play as many rounds of the game as you like!
